United States:

  • Over 20% of youth in the U.S., ages 12-17, reported experiencing a major depressive episode (MDE) in 2024, 15% of which reported an MDE seriously impacting how they function (Mental Health America, 2024).

  • A little more than half (51%) of youth ages 6-17 in the U.S. who have a reported mental health condition receive treatment in a given year (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2023).

  • Between 2016 and 2022, youth mental health hospitalizations climbed 124% (Clarify Health, 2023). 

  • Suicide rates in Native American teens are nearly 3.5 times higher than the national average and suicide is also the second leading cause of death for Native American youth ages 10-24 (Center for Native American Youth, 2025).

  • Black female high school students are 60% more likely than their non-Hispanic white females to attempt suicide (Pathlight, 2022). It is also more probable for Black youth to be diagnosed with ADHD or a conduct disorder than their white peers and they are less likely to be diagnosed with a mood disorder (Pathlight, 2022). 

  • More than 1 in 10 (12%) LGBTQ+ young people attempted suicide in the past year (The Trevor Project, 2024).

Arizona​:

  • 57.8% of Arizonans ages 12-17 who reported having depression did not receive any care in the last year (NAMI, 2023)

  • 7 in 10 (70%) youth in Arizona's juvenile justice system reported experiencing a mental health condition (NAMI, 2023).

  • 39% of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered suicide in the past year, including 41% of transgender and nonbinary young people (The Trevor Project, 2024).

  • 55% of LGBTQ+ young people reported experiencing symptoms of depression, including 60% of transgender and nonbinary young people. (The Trevor Project, 2024).

  • 64% of LGBTQ+ young people reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety, including 67% of transgender and nonbinary young people (The Trevor Project, 2024).

  • Of the LGBTQ+ young people who wanted to receive mental health care in Arizona, 55% did not receive care while 45% did (The Trevor Project, 2024).

Fountain Hills:

  • According to the Fountain Hills Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition's 2022 Community Survey, residents identified the top three issues impacting the community as 1) Anxiety/Stress, 2) Alcohol and Substance Use, and 3) Depression. 

  • Of the caregivers who took the Community Survey, the top concerns about their children identified included how they manage stress (75.48%), mental health (73.58%), and use of social media (71.70%).
